About us

adb4.com is a small, quiet library. It holds tens of thousands of books that belong to everybody — the public-domain catalogue kept alive by Project Gutenberg — and, next to them on the same shelves, books written by the people who read here.

What it is for

Reading. Not collecting, not scrolling, not being recommended things by a machine that has worked out what keeps you here longest. There is no advertising on any page, nothing is for sale, and no third party learns what you are reading, because nothing on any page is loaded from one.

Anyone can read here without an account. An account adds the things that only make sense when the site knows who you are: a library of your own, bookmarks, notes, your place in a book kept for when you come back, reviews, and a way for us to write to you.

The two kinds of book

Public-domain books come from Project Gutenberg's catalogue. They are old enough that they belong to everybody, and we mirror them so that they load quickly and keep working whether or not any other site is up.

Community books are written by members and published here by them. Every one of them is badged so you always know which you are reading. Nobody was paid, nobody was turned away, and each was sent in by the person who wrote it, who promised us it was theirs to send.

Who runs it

A small group of people, not a company with a data department. When something is broken, a person reads the message and a person fixes it.
